This Stunt Rider from the early 1900's would appear at carnivals and sideshows....sort of an early Trials Rider.

 

A 1920's French recumbent called the Velocar. Note the headlight and the luggage compartment.

 

The first recumbent on the Velodrome race circuit in 1933..smashed existing speed records which led to the UCI banning recumbents from racing....too fast and the upright bike industry wouldn't have it, so it lobbied for the ban.
